how to focus better – where to begin focusing

For many people, focus is a task that we just don’t, or can’t seem to do. Let me help you get your life in focus.

What is focus?

What is focus? The dictionary describes it as; “a central point, attraction, attention point or activity”.

Focus is the key to life. If we are not focused, we are drifting.

Focus requires steps to be taken, action must be planned.

How do we focus?

  1. First, you must make a decision to stop drifting through life. You must write down your goals, the things you want to accomplish, what you want to be, where you want to go, how you plan to get there.
  2. Every night before going to bed take a pad and pencil and write down the things you need to do the next day. Don’t try to prioritize them now, just make sure you write EVERYTHING down. Then sleep like a baby!
  3. Set aside one hour during the day that you can be uninterrupted. I prefer a cup of coffee at 6 am before I begin my day. Write down everything you need to accomplish in life. List every goal you want to achieve. Don’t try to prioritize at this point, just write it down.
  4. At the end of the day, cut the TV and look over your list of things you need to do and the goals you want to achieve. Now, begin to prioritize them. List the steps under each one that you will need to achieve the goals, or get things done.

Does multitasking work?

Ask three consultants and you will receive three different answers, however, most will tell you NO, it does not work.

There are exceptions to this; however, I have found that when you try to concentrate on two different things, neither of them gets done properly. Focus or concentrate on one thing and do it well.

Write it down

It sounds like a broken record, but it is so powerful I have to repeat it. Put it on paper.

When I was learning to fly an airplane, my flight instructor told me to plan my flight, and fly my plan.

It is one thing to plan your day, but it is another thing to actually do what you plan.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Life is complicated already, don’t complicate it further.

Focus on your goals and you will reach them-guaranteed.

how do you have hope – what happens when there is none?

Without hope, life is not worth living. I am going to show you how you can have hope, even in the worst situation that will come into your life.

When there is no hope

“Dr. White, your wife has cancer and only has 5 months to live.” Life is filled with many challenges. There will be setbacks, and there will be victories, but the most valuable thing that a person can have is hope.

What is hope?

The words hope and trust are often used synonymously in the Old Testament. Webster defines it: to cherish a desire with anticipation.

We sometimes use the term incorrectly when we say, “hope you are feeling better”, as a figure of speech. Hope is the undisputed expectation that something spectacular is going to happen.

Hope is our base of expecting there is a solution for the situation we may find ourselves in now.

Where do I find hope?

Where do we get this hope? For some, the source is the Holy Bible.

For some, a dear friend offers them encouragement.

Some turn to the family doctor for hope and inspiration. Hope comes to some through reading inspirational books.

How do I acquire hope?

A person can gain hope from many of the same sources where hope is found. It may be a priest or minister. It may be your church or synagogue, but hope can be found.

I am reminded of the kids having Christmas, and one of the children had asked for a pony. When he did not get the pony, he found a piece of straw and said, “There’s a pony here somewhere!” That my friend is hope. Hope is where you find it.

What do I do when there is no hope?

There will be times when there just is no hope. I have been there.

My five-year-old daughter was hit by a hit-and-run driver and left in the road for dead. When I picked her up in my arms and took her to the hospital, the doctor said, Mr. White, she will not make it through the night. There was no hope.

When the doctor came to me and told me that my wife of fifty years had pancreatic cancer and would not survive more than five months. There was no hope.

When the doctor held up the X-rays and told me that I was going to have a kidney removed, there was no hope. For me, I turned to God and the Holy Scriptures. I turned to friends and found inspiration.

You may not believe in God, and I respect your feelings, however, it worked for me. My darling daughter is alive and well today.

God brought a beautiful woman into my life after my first wife passed away. My kidney is still functioning, so for me, I found hope, where there was no hope.

worry free life – is it really possible

I wrote this post for

Is it really possible to live a worry-free life?

Why worry?

Whether you are a Christian, Moslem or an Atheist, everyone worries. Some may not accept it, but you do. It is a natural part of getting up in the morning and going to bed at night.

Disregard the fact that almost 90% of the things we worry about never come true we ALL worry. Just what is worry? “To be anxious about something that has happened or might happen or make somebody do this.”

We sometimes worry about the economy, our job, our debts, illness, to either us or our family, or a thousand other things. No matter what you name it, it is worry.

Can you do anything about it?

Question is can we do anything about it? Let me ask you a question – can you change anything about the situation worrying you? the

If the answer is yes, then make the changes and stop worrying. If the answer is no, whatever is going to happen is going to happen, and you cannot change it, so stop worrying about it.

Easy you say – not really, however; you CAN do it.

 Stop and think.

When you go to bed, stop and think – what is the worst thing that can come from this? I cannot pay my bill tomorrow – welcome to the club – millions of others are with you!

Call the bank or whom you owe the money. Explain your situation. 90% of the time, they will be glad to give you a reprieve, possibly even lower the interest, or accept a partial payment, or delay the payment.

DO SOMETHING – do not close your eyes with worry, just do what you can and leave the consequences to the consequences.

Will I go to jail if I do not pay the bill? Nope – no debtor’s prison today.

Will I die on the operating table tomorrow? If you cannot change anything, your destiny is in the surgeon’s hands.

Just stand there.

Do not do something – stand there!

Yes, it is a play on words, but there is a lot of truth in it. A. L. Williams, the leading insurance man once said; “When all you can do is all you can do then all you can do is enough.”

When you have done everything you know to do, just wait it out.

Bottom line in all of this is the fact that you indubitably cannot do that much to change your situation. When you have done all you can do, leave it in the hands of a higher power if you believe in one – if not, good luck!

I have suffered heartbreaking setbacks and have had some wonderful successes as well.

Don’t try to bury your worries in alcohol or drugs. Don’t toss and turn at night thinking about tomorrow. My best advice comes from Scripture:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

how to have a new perspective on life – only you can change it

Ever hear that “life is what you make it”?

Your perspective on life

Norman Juster tells a story in The Phantom Tollbooth that has a character named Alec who offers a terrific example of perspective. “From here that looks like a bucket of water”. Alec said, pointing to a bucket of water, but from an ant’s point of view, it’s a vast ocean, from an elephant’s, just a cool drink and to a fish, of course, it’s home. So, you see, the way you see things depends a great deal on where you look at them from.

How do you see perspective?

The definition of perspective is “a way of looking at or thinking about something”. As Alec says, it’s all in your own viewpoint. To a prospective investor, an oil well is gold. To a neighbor listening to the noise and the smell, it is a nuisance. It has been rightfully said, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”. To a teen rock music is THE thing, but to us older folk, my grandpa had the right perspective, it’s racket! That is perspective.

What is your perspective on life?

Two men walking along a country road saw a mule. One said that is the first white mule I have ever seen. The other replied, “You fool, that’s a gray mule”. As they got closer to the mule they found they were both wrong, it was brown. It is all in your own unique way and what your opinion is in relation to the object in question.

It could be as simple as going for a walk. Surprisingly, a good meal of “comfort food” could make a significant change. Reading a terrific book, watching a decent movie, all these things can make a positive difference in your unique perspective.

Can your perspective change?

As we have discussed, your perspective depends on several things. If you are sick, you can probably change your perspective by going to a doctor. If you don’t have any money you may find a job, or borrow money from a friend.

That can change your perspective. If you have been surrounded by negative people, you can change that by dumping the negative friends and surround yourself with positive people. Someone told the great preacher D. L. Moody that his lifestyle was a matter of luck. Moody replied that the more he prayed, the luckier he got!

Your view of life will depend entirely on your perspective, and as you can see, there is a no nonsense approach to changing your perspective. Change your location, your viewpoint and your situation and you will find your perspective is different.

How to manage time – best solutions to time management

Time in a bottle? Don’t you wish

Can you actually manage your time?

The obvious answer is yes. The obvious solution is a bit more complicated. Everything depends on you…do you want to manage your time?

  1. First comes the decision – to manage, or not to manage. That is the question.
  2. If the answer is yes, then we have to find a way to do it.
  3. If the answer is no, won’t matter what you use, it won’t work

What do I need to manage my time?

First comes the decision to do so. With that made, it can go from simple to complicated, cheap or expensive.

Now that you have decided to take control of your life, let’s explore ways to do so.

  1. Cheap or expensive?
  2. Simple or complicated?
  3. Time consuming or time saving?

Let’s decide which way to go…cheap, or expensive.

  1. Cheap is a yellow pad and pen
  2. Expensive is a time consultant to help you manage your time
  3. Simple is the yellow pad and pen.
  4. Complicated are some calendar/to do software programs
  5. Time consuming are time consultants and some complicated calendar/dodo software
  6. Time saving are simple, uncomplicated calendar/todo software and the simple yellow pad/penSolutions

I have always said that I don’t want you to tell me about a problem until you offer me a solution! Here are some suggestions for solutions:

  1. David Allen is the master! His book, Getting Things Done, is a timeless masterpiece. I encourage everyone to read it. He also has an excellent website:
  2. David changed my life several years ago with his “Mind like water” solution. The starting point in getting organized is to get everything out of your head. Several ways to do that:
  • Sit down with a yellow pad and pen. Write down EVERYTHING that comes to your mind. Everything that you need or ever want to do. Get it on paper and out of your mind.
  • You can do the same thing with a good todo software and there are loads of them for both the analog and the IPhone.
  • Examples are: todoist, anydo, simplenote, Asana and many more. Most of these are free.
  • After you have put everything on paper or in the “cloud,” then begin to prioritize each one: Things I HAVE to do, things I NEED to do, things I WANT to do and things I MAY want to do some day.
  • Next, after your prioritize your list, set up steps to do under each thing you have to do.
  • Example: Paint the kitchen – a. choose the color. b. buy the paint. c. buy the supplies (tape, brushes, roller, pan, ladder, etc.). d. choose the day to do it. e. clear the kitchen counters. f. mask the windows and areas you DON’T want to paint. g. PAINT
  • You now have everything out of your head and on paper or the computer. You now have an action plan. You have your priorities set.

It’s not rocket science! You can decide for yourself if you want to uncomplicate your life by putting everything down on paper or in the computer. Only you can decide if you are going to follow through with an action plan. You can hire an expensive time management guru to do it for you or you can KISS it – Keep It Simple Stupid!

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You have to take the first step. You can do it today, wait for a better day (when?), or maybe someday.

Ball’s in your court. You can take control of your life, or just keep letting life happen. All too quickly the “time in the bottle” has spilled out.

I’ll be glad to help you anyway I can. I’ve been doing it for many, many years.

importance of a healthy lifestyle – how to get it and keep it

What is a healthy lifestyle?

Eating right

The importance of a healthy lifestyle begins with a healthy diet. What does this mean?

  1. Proper times of the day to eat
  2. Proper food to eat
  3. How to eat

When is the best or proper time to eat?

Not when you’re hungry! Same thing goes for grocery shopping. Almost all nutritionist tell you that your day should begin with a healthy breakfast.

What is a healthy breakfast? For some, it will be bacon and eggs. Others will be content with an English muffin, juice and coffee. Some will be happy with a health shake and coffee, or perhaps tea.

Best time for breakfast, if you can, is as soon as you get up and get dressed, especially if you work during the day.

Good time for lunch, if at all possible is near the mid-day, or noon.

Ideal time for dinner is before 7, if at all possible. This gives your food time to digest and not lay on your stomach while you try to sleep.

A great time for a snack is never…if you have to have one, make it healthy, such as a piece of fruit, or raw veggies, or maybe unsalted nuts.

With all this said, you’re working hours may change that somewhat, but these are great guidelines if you can.

Proper food to eat

Healthy food of course, but what is healthy? No doubt but fresh fruits and vegetables are ideal. Occasionally mixing in some chicken and fish and on rare occasions, beef. The debate goes on and on about vegetarian as opposed to the meat and potatoes diets.

There’s the South Beach Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the Adkins Diet, and the list goes on and on. What is the very best diet? The one that works for you! If you don’t like it, you won’t eat it, no matter how good or healthy it is.

Try different things until you find something that you enjoy eating and at the same time, helps you get to the weight level that you want to be at.

How to eat

Okay, okay, I know…with a plate and utensils… I heard that!

First, get away from your desk or work site. Many companies provide an area that is clean and conducive to eating. A picnic area is great, but best of all is a table and chairs. The old fashion dining room table is fantastic. A park bench can also be a great place. The important thing is to stop working and eat.

Don’t hold a sandwich in one hand and a cell phone in the other. Don’t set your plate on your computer!

Equally, if not more important, is how much you eat. My doctor told me that my portion of food should be no larger than my fist. At first, that seemed like cruel and unusual punishment! After trying it, I found that was just right.

Don’t eat until you’re full. Nearly every doctor and dietitian will tell you to only eat what you are comfortable with. Wait just five minutes and you’ll feel full…try it for yourself.

One doctor told me to fix a plate with whatever I wanted to eat, push half of it off onto another plate and have it for dinner (or supper, as we say in the South).

I know, that’s almost as bad as a four letter word! You can have the very best diet possible and if you don’t do some kind of exercise, you will not be healthy. Groan and gripe all you want, but the evidence is stacked against you. It will not work.

What’s the best kind of exercise?

The kind that works…where have I heard that before? You can hire the very best personal trainer, join the nicest gym in the area and waste your money.

Bottom line is that you have to find something that works for you. I’ve tried it all. Hired a personal trainer. Joined a great gym. Worked out 2 times a week and still was overweight. You have got to get the right combination of healthy eating and healthy exercise.

You know what works for me? Walking, just simple walking. It is one mile from my house to our post office and back. I do that five times a week, weather permitting. If the weather is bad, I go to the local gym and ride the stationary bike or use the walking/running machine.

Hey, are you telling me I have to exercise five times a week? No, but two is better than none. Actually, my personal trainer spilled the beans and told me that if I walked one mile, three times a week, it would be as good as he could do in my workout with him.

I took his advice and now I enjoy the scenery, the birds singing, the flowers growing and the breath of fresh air.

Eighty years old, six feet into the air and weight between 195 and 205 pounds. My doctor is a happy camper and every three months loves to tell me what great shape I’m in.

Get out there and smell the roses and walk yourself into your ideal weight. You just might meet someone you really would like to walk with. You won’t know until you try it.

Just too simple? Darn tootin and it works. You can go ahead and waste your money on gourmet food, personal trainers, workout classes (and by the way, there are some good ones), or you can KISS it… Keep It Simple Stupid!

Remember, I told you my goal was to help you find the healthy lifestyle. You have to admit, you can’t beat the price and it actually works. Of course, I am assuming that you are not bed fast, or too ill to walk.

Try it…you just might like it.
